Bright yellow walls from smoking, broken floors and sleeping in the living room because the bedroom is unlivable. That is how Huub and Beate have lived in their house for fifteen years. Cousin Wesley can no longer watch how his aunt and uncle live and calls in the help of ‘Help, My Husband Is Handyman!’.

“I really hate to see it”

In 2006, just after the start of the renovation of the house, Huub suffered a brain haemorrhage, which brought the work to a complete standstill. As a result, the problems pile up and their house slowly turns into a ruin. “I really hate to see it,” says Wesley.

The situation is so serious that Huub and Beate flee their own home. “This is their home and you should feel safe here and not somewhere else,” their cousin explains. And so John calls on the help of his handyman team to transform the house into a dream home.

But when the stress hits Huub and Beate, it all becomes too much for Huub. “It doesn’t go the way I want. (…) That it often doesn’t work anymore and that is the big problem.” His brain haemorrhage has made the simple things of the past a lot more difficult and he has to learn to accept that.

Fortunately, he can get back to it after a pep talk from John. “Let’s see what’s left in it,” John suggests to Huub. Within a few days the house has received a total makeover and stylist Dagmar comes by to furnish the house. Huub and Beate get a new floor and new furniture, making their house look like new again.

When they enter their house again, they cannot believe their eyes. “Unbelievable. (…) I don’t know what to say. I’m just speechless,” Beate says in amazement. Huub is also very happy that the ruin, where they lived for fifteen years, has been completely renovated. When he stands in the bedroom, tears well up in his eyes. “We’ll sleep well here, honey.”

Since the handyman team has not been able to tackle everything in-house, Huub and Beate will still have to get to work themselves. The bathroom in particular needs a thorough renovation. When John returns to the house after two weeks, he does not know what he sees. “No dude, I’m being tricked.” The bathroom looks like new and Huub and Beate are very happy with their ‘new’ house. Finally they can enjoy their dream home in peace.
