A magnitude (M) earthquake rocked Australia, specifically on Macquarie Island. Until now there is no threat of a tsunami due to the earthquake.

Reported by AFP, Monday (4/3/2024), the earthquake occurred at 16.16 local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in the sea, off the south coast of Macquarie Island.

“Approximately 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) southwest of New Zealand’s south island, at a depth of 10 kilometers,” the US Geological Survey said.

For your information, Macquarie Island is a small island belonging to Australia which is located about half way between New Zealand and Antarctica. It has no permanent residents, but there is an Australian Antarctic Division station there.

Later, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that there was “no tsunami threat” from the initial quake.

Macquarie Island is located near the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where Earth’s tectonic plates collide, and experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
