Actor Russell Crowe has a high pain threshold. In a recent interview with People Magazine, he revealed that he broke both legs on the set of the action film Robin Hood in 2010. He didn’t find out until a decade later.

During the interview with People Magazine, the 59-year-old actor revealed that at the time he thought he had had “a little accident.” He jumped from a castle gate onto hard, uneven ground. According to Crowe, the intention was to place some kind of cushion or crash mat on that ground, but because the crew was in a hurry to shoot the scene at sunset, that didn’t happen. With all its consequences.

“It was a violent scene with lots of flying arrows and flaming pots setting the castle on fire, there was no retreat,” Crowe told People Magazine. “As I jumped, I remember thinking, ‘This is going to hurt.’”

When he landed, it felt like “an electric shock” shot through his body. He struggled through the recordings in recent weeks, but at times he said he had “difficulty walking.” Yet he persevered and never discussed his injury with the crew on set.

Pain again

After a while the pain subsided, but 10 years later he again suffered from a “very strange pain.” So he went to the doctor for an MRI and x-rays. In his own words, he thought it was nothing serious and that his body simply lacked “exercise and sunshine.” Yet he was wrong. The doctor asked him: “Could it be that you broke your legs 10 years ago?”

When the doctor said that, Crowe immediately knew what it was about. It must have been that one infamous scene from Robin Hood. “Everything for art. No casts, no splints, no painkillers, I just kept working and over time they healed themselves.”

Afterwards, the actor realized that he had taken a year off after production of Robin Hood wrapped.
