The world is in shock after a tourist couple was beaten and robbed in India, and the wife was even raped. Apparently, similar events have occurred in that country, many times.

The disaster occurred on Friday (1/3/2024) evening. At that time, a Spanish tourist couple named Vincente and Fernanda rested in Dumka, Jharkhand District, India.

They are travel influencers who are traveling the world. They have passed through more than 60 countries. Uniquely, they travel the world by riding motorbikes.

In Dumka, they camped because they couldn’t find any empty hotels. The plan was that the next day they would continue their journey to Nepal.

However, that night turned into a disaster. They were beaten, robbed, and the wife was raped. Vicente and Fernanda were found by police on the side of the road in Dumka District, Jharkand state, on Friday (01/03) at around 23.00. Dumka Police Chief Pitamber Singh Kherwa the couple was battered.

Vicente and Fernanda told the story through a video on Instagram Story @vueltaalmundoenmoto.

The video attracted international attention. The Spanish government responded and Indian police intervened. So far, the police have arrested four suspects. Three others are being hunted.

Not the First Rape in India

Gang rape and sexual violence is not the only time this has happened in India. The victims did not discriminate, local residents or the police.

One particularly horrific rape case occurred in December 2012. At that time, Jyoti Singh, 23, a physiotherapist student, was gang raped on the bus she was traveling in. The bus was bound for Dwarka, a satellite city southwest of Delhi.

Jyoti was not alone on the bus. He was with his male friend, Awindra Pandey. Awindra was beaten until he was unconscious

Jyiti wasn’t just raped. He was also beaten and tortured, his genitals damaged, until his intestines were cut open. The body was thrown away as the bus was moving.

The perpetrators were five men and one teenage boy. This unreasonable crime lasted for 20 minutes. Four of them were sentenced to death ten months later. One of the perpetrators, Ram Singh, the driver, chose to hang himself in the cell. Teenage boys are proven to actually carry out the cruelest acts.

This incident sparked massive protests and changed the laws and regulations in India regarding rape crimes. Despite this, tens of thousands of rape cases are still reported every year.

Residents and tourists are still haunted by threats of rape and sexual harassment.

In fact, a year later a tourist from England jumped out the window of a hotel room on the third floor. His room was knocked on by a man, who was later discovered to be the hotel owner.

The tourist was afraid he would be raped. After that, he reported to the police station. He was not seriously injured, but suffered a leg injury.

According to the police, the tourist remembered what happened to Jyoti. The hotel owner was then questioned and arrested.

In 2015, it was also recorded that a tourist from Japan reported to an Indian police station after being raped by her tour guide. The incident occurred in Jaipur in February.

The guide took the female tourist on a motorbike to tour Jaipur. Instead, the victim was taken to a quiet place and raped.

A month earlier, another Japanese tourist was also raped by a group of people in Kolkata. The rape was carried out by six people.

On December 20 2018, a British tourist was also raped in Goa. CNN reported that the rape case occurred when the victim was walking back to the hotel. He’s from Palolem Beach.

The rape case was reported the next morning at 04.30. Police said the perpetrator of the rape saw the victim walking alone on the street. The perpetrator dragged her into a dark empty field, raped her and stole her bag.

In the same year, Russian tourists became victims. He was traveling solo in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu District.

The 21-year-old woman was found unconscious and naked in a hostel room on July 16 2018. Police said there were bite marks on the victim’s face and hands.

AFP reported six people were arrested in the rape case. Egregious among the perpetrators were hostel managers and tour guides. The victim was rushed to hospital for treatment and examination. The medical report stated that the victim had experienced sexual violence.

In 2022, a British tourist was raped in front of his girlfriend while at Arambol Sweet Water Beach in Goa, South India. The Sun reported that the perpetrator was a 32 year old man and was part of a gang of illegal massage services in the beach area.
