A snake over 6 meters long and weighing around 200 kilograms swims along the bottom of a river in Brazil. This is the green anaconda, which can grow up to 9 meters.
Scientists in South America have been looking for these animals and taking samples from them to determine how the oil spill affects the anacondas.
“We studied anacondas as an indicator to determine the damage caused by the oil spill in Ecuador,” said Professor Bryan Fry.
However, scientists have discovered something completely different: it turns out that there are two species of green anacondas, the southern and the northern.
“We were able to show that these two species diverged from each other almost 10 million years ago. However, these animals are completely identical,” the professor taught.
Previously, only southern green anacondas were thought to exist. And the camera captured the northern green anaconda. The genetic difference between the two anacondas is only 5 percent.
