Dutch hotels, campsites and other overnight accommodations welcomed almost 50 million people last year. Never before has that number been so large. Foreign tourists in particular were able to find our country again.

Statistics agency CBS saw that last year 49.7 million domestic and foreign guests booked an overnight stay in the Netherlands. That was more than 8 percent more than the year before.

The increase was mainly seen among tourists from across the border. Their number grew by about a quarter to 20.4 million. This means that the number of foreign guests has returned to pre-coronavirus levels.

During the pandemic, many Dutch people decided to book a holiday in their own country. This number is no longer growing. But because the number of foreign tourists is increasing, a record was achieved last year.

Not surprisingly, Amsterdam is especially popular. The capital welcomed nine million tourists, which represents an increase of 21 percent compared to a year earlier.

If you only look at foreigners, there was even a growth of 26 percent. The city is especially popular among British, Americans and Germans. Many Belgians also spend the night in our country, but they often choose other places.
