Sudha Murthy, 73, was previously the chairman of Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of global technology giant Infosys, which was founded in 1981 by her husband NR Narayana Murthy.

The couple’s daughter Akshata married R. Sunak in 2009.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “delighted” by President Droupadi Murmu’s announcement of Murthy’s candidacy for the upper house.

In a statement on the social network, he said her “contributions to various fields, including social work, philanthropy and education, are immense and inspiring.”

Most members of India’s upper house of parliament are elected, but 12 of them, usually high achievers in public life, are appointed by the president for six-year terms. S. Murthy’s appointment is effective immediately.

An engineer by training, Murthy is also a noted writer and her foundation has been involved in setting up libraries in rural areas.

Last year, the Indian government awarded Murthy India’s third highest civilian award for her professional work in the social field.
