As the deputy head of the ministry explained, “the number of about 5,000 positions, these are not people, but positions, these are – how to say it in accounting terms – positions for which Poczta Polska, the new management of Poczta Polska, intends to reduce the level of (…) employment for 2024”.

This is to take place as a result of natural staff turnover, i.e. employee recruitment will be limited, and expiring contracts, such as mandate contracts or fixed-term employment contracts, will not be extended – he added.

The deputy minister informed that the transformation plan being prepared does not provide for the liquidation of Poczta Polska and does not envisage limiting the post office’s activities to “some hull shape”.

As President Sebastian Mikosz said in a letter to Poczta Polska employees on Tuesday, in 2023 Poczta Polska recorded a historic loss.

Mikosz emphasized that he “had to” give employees bad information about the company’s financial results. He added that he could not provide the exact amounts yet, and the results would be made public soon. However, the president emphasized that the operator recorded “the largest historical loss” for 2023.

“The level of the loss we have recorded causes us to take a number of actions to prevent the situation from worsening in the short term. The first quarter of this year also indicates a continuation of the negative trend, which we must stop as soon as possible through joint efforts. The amounts do not differ significantly from these which were quoted unofficially by the media, but as soon as I am able to do so, I will officially provide you with much more detailed information,” the president said in a letter to employees.

Mikosz added that the Post Office is getting closer to receiving an advance payment for compensation for the provision of unprofitable universal services for 2021-22.

“The President signed the act providing such an opportunity, but at the same time referred it to the Constitutional Tribunal to examine the correctness of its adoption. Regardless of the further political consequences of the head of state’s decision, the amount of approximately PLN 700 million may sound impressive, but, once again, I will repeat, it is not “is no remedy for our problems. The compensation only covers the costs already incurred and does not translate into a lasting improvement in the company’s situation,” he added.
