Ten years after the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, Turkish authorities arrested a fugitive former helicopter pilot and dismissed captain who participated in the Marmaris assassination plot against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, ending a decade-long manhunt.
Security forces captured the long-sought fugitive in Afyonkarahisar during a targeted operation at a local safe house, according to an official announcement from the Turkish Ministry of Interior. The arrest resolves the final outstanding suspect from the 37-person special forces team that stormed the hotel where President Erdoğan was staying on the night of the 2016 putsch.
Afyonkarahisar Safe House Raid and Seized Materials
Operating under the coordination of the General Directorate of Security Intelligence Presidency, joint intelligence and counterterrorism teams from the Afyonkarahisar and Eskişehir Provincial Security Directorates tracked the suspect to an apartment in the city center. Security sources reported that Karatepe had used multiple aliases and continually altered his appearance over the past decade to evade detection, but his identity was flagged after he registered in a facial recognition system.
Investigators detained him in an upper-floor apartment at the İnaz Earthquake Houses in Dörtyol Mahallesi, located along the Afyonkarahisar-Kütahya highway. Footage from the scene showed a largely vacant three-story residential building where the suspect lived alone, surrounded by stockpiled provisions, market bags, and half-empty beverage bottles. Authorities stated that Karatepe was preparing to flee abroad with a substantial amount of currency.
During the search of the safe house, police seized a large cache of items that were subsequently displayed at the Afyonkarahisar Counterterrorism Branch Directorate.

On the night of July 15, 2016, a 37-member assault team targeted the hotel in Marmaris where the Turkish president was vacationing. While 36 members of the raiding party were captured shortly after the failed coup, Karatepe managed to escape.
According to detailed investigative accounts, Karatepe stripped off his military camouflage after the attack, donned shorts, flip-flops, and sunglasses, and fled first to Izmir before reaching Eskişehir with the help of an acquaintance.
Security files note that Karatepe faced active Red Notices and outstanding judicial warrants for multiple serious offenses, including attempting to assassinate the president, homicide in connection with a public duty, violations of the Military Penal Code, and nighttime armed robbery committed by multiple persons within a residence.

Senior political figures responded immediately to the capture of the final fugitive from the Marmaris assault team, framing the operation within the broader scope of state security policy.
AK Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik stated that this treasonous terrorist network is still protected by certain circles in some countries, and added that continuing the fight against this network without interruption in Turkey and all over the world is a national duty.
The Ministry of Interior reiterated its stance that operations against the network and its remnants will continue without interruption. Karatepe remains in police custody in Afyonkarahisar while judicial proceedings advance.
