The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, emphasized on Thursday in the meeting with the Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu one of the common challenges on the side of Justice. “I think it is important, among the challenges we have, that the prisoners who have been sentenced definitively can be returned to their country of origin,” said the prime minister of Italy, the country of refuge preferred by Romania’s famous fugitives.

During the joint meeting between the Governments of Romania and Italy, Giorgia Meloni specified that seven memoranda of understanding were signed, one of which was on Justice.

The Prime Minister of Italy emphasized the significant presence of over 50,000 Italian companies in Romania, in strategic sectors such as energy, infrastructure or banks, but also the important role of the Romanian community in Italy, the largest foreign community with over a million people.

Ciolacu, thanks for reducing the time to resolve the pension files of Romanians who worked in Italy

On the other hand, the prime minister wanted to express special thanks for unblocking the situation regarding the settlement of the pension files of the Romanians who worked in Italy.

  • “If until now the waiting period for the resolution of a file reached 2-3 years, now, by supplementing the Italian officials who deal with this, this term has been reduced to 3-4 months.
  • At the same time, I count on your support to succeed in completing the negotiations on the Agreement between the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate and the Italian government, started in 2012, regarding the state of the Romanian Orthodox clergy in Italy. The Orthodox Episcopate represents an essential support for the Romanians here and I am convinced that we will reach a consensus”, declared Prime Minister Ciolacu.

Ciolacu also announced that he decided as prime minister that the Government of Romania should contribute to the repairs currently being made to Trajan’s Column, a monument that represents a cornerstone for the Romanian people, but also for the cultural relations between the two nations.

The enormous sum paid by the Romanian state just last year to bring some of Romania’s fugitive convicts into the country

Last year alone, the Romanian state paid approximately two million euros to bring some of the fugitive convicts to the country, the costs being calculated for less than 600 missions organized in 2023 by the Ministry of the Interior to bring fugitives to Romania.

Mario Iorgulescu, Alina Bica, Paul de Romania, Sorin Oprescu or Dragoș Săvulescu are just a few names on the list of fugitives who, after being convicted, found refuge in other countries, many in Italy and Greece, and some of them in Romania he has not been able to bring them to the country for years.

Among the latest additions to the list is the former mayor of Baia Mare Cătălin Cherecheș, who managed to flee the country a few hours before he was definitively sentenced to 5 years in prison with execution for bribery. At this moment, Cătălin Chereches is incarcerated in a penitentiary in Germany, awaiting extradition procedures. He refused to give his consent for simplified extradition, and his lawyers are trying to prevent, through extraordinary means of attack, the bringing of the former mayor to the country.
