“Dear friends,
the following lines are only a brief description of what is happening in Slovakia. If you don’t believe this information because it is too absurd, check it by simply looking at the Slovak media or we can provide you with more detailed information,” Smer chairman Robert Fico said in a letter to European politicians.
In the words of a tired and broken man, he described the sense of injustice and fear he allegedly felt. He complained about threats of criminal prosecutions, the system of penitents, about Daniel Lipšic, about political purges, abuse of criminal law, manipulation, false statements, about the police persecution of the opposition, about the fact that at that time he was accused three times, even brought to the police station. .
It was April 2022, and Fico knew that by complaining to the European institutions, he could use leverage not only against the then coalition of OĽaNO, SaS, Sme rodina and Za lúdí, but also against the EU itself and the Commission, if Brussels did not stand up for him. Which, in this case, was extremely plausible, as Fico’s complaints stood on the water. Or they were completely fabricated.
For Robert Fico’s politics, this is an ideal scenario – to have a strong internal (government, President Zuzana Čaputovámedia, etc.), but also an external enemy (e.g. the EU), although this may not be true in reality.
It was confirmed in July of the same year.
Fico once again complained about the government’s actions, but this time with an attack on the European Commission: “Over the past eighteen months, the European Commission has been repeatedly informed about the gross abuse of criminal law to liquidate the opposition, the violation of the rights of the accused, the fabrication of evidence or the suspicious deaths of the accused in custody. The report of the European Commission absolutely ignored this reality. I’m not going to speculate why that happened. However, it is not possible to respect such obvious misleading of the international public about the situation in Slovakia, which has nothing to do with the rule of law.”
Double standard.
When Fico feels wronged, he complains wherever he can. Also on the lamppost.
He uses all possibilities and, of course, is not afraid to color it all up or lie openly. Because everything is allowed in the defense of his person, party and “our people” – even the dirtiest practices.
However, as soon as foreign authorities and independent professional institutions notice that it is his system that commits illegality, destroys the rule of law, harms democracy, they immediately consider it a lynching against him.
And deceived people applaud him.
