TG Nandakumar was called ‘Nandappan’ by those close to him at that time. Activities were centered around Elamakara. But Nandakumar became a constant presence in the back seat of Kerala politics.
A leader said about meeting Nandakumar after falling out with the Congress: “What I see next is him sitting in the business class of a flight to Mumbai and Delhi, wearing a safari suit and carrying a briefcase. He will only sit in the back seat of the plane.” Nandakumar himself later said in an interview to a private channel that he was only sitting in the back seat about the allegation that he used to travel in the business class of the plane to get close to many celebrities. Nandakumar was born in an ordinary family. He is one of the two children of Alappuzha Nedumudi Thannikal Gopinathan Nair and Shanthakumari, a housewife. After the death of his father Gopinathan Nair in 1977, Nandakumar shifted his field of activity to the city of Kochi. Later he got into minor political activity. Now residing in Ernakulam Vennala. Vennala Thaikat is also the Chairman of Sri Mahadevakshetra Samiti.
There was a lot of controversy when EP Jayarajan participated in the function of honoring Nandakumar’s mother at this temple without participating in the popular resistance yatra led by CPM state secretary MV Govindan. Starting with Reliance Fresh, the constant shadow of controversy
Nandakumar came into the limelight as an officer who appeared for Reliance Fresh. Reliance Fresh has faced objections to opening outlets in Kerala. For Reliance, the then Chief Minister V.S. Nandakumar later said that he went to see Achuthanandan and cleared the misunderstandings. So how did Nandakumar get close to VS? Nandakumar’s reply was some phone calls. With that, Nandakumar slowly established himself as a person who pulls the strings with the political leadership for the corporate sector. It was followed by the controversial action of transfer of data center which made the V.S. Achuthanandan government at the center of controversy. If Reliance Fresh was for Mukesh Ambani, it was Anil Ambani’s group that appointed Nandakumar to negotiate for the data center.

In 2009, Reliance Communications took over the management of the data center and its 3 network operating centers. There were widespread complaints against this. PC George came forward alleging Nandakumar’s interference in the matter. With the replacement of the VS government and the arrival of the Oommen Chandy government, a CBI investigation was finally announced after many hurdles and allegations. Along with VS, Nandakumar has also become a co-accused.
The report submitted by the CBI to the Kerala High Court stated that there were no irregularities in the data center transfer. VS and Nandakumar were acquitted. Meanwhile, Nandakumar’s name also came up regarding the Edamalayar case. Nandakumar’s closeness to VS was one of the main topics of discussion even during the CPM factionalism when VS Achuthanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan were positioned in Irucheri. P. Karunakaran, appointed by the CPM, had alleged that Nandakumar was behind the transfer of the Lavlin case to the CBI.
In the last assembly election, Nandakumar’s name was heard even when there were allegations that there was a planned attempt to defeat J. Mercykuttiamma from the Kollam constituency. There were allegations that Nandakumar was behind getting the Vizhinjam port to the Adani Group and reducing the objections. It was Nandakumar who accompanied Gautam Adani and his son Karan Adani when they came to visit Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan in 2015. Another is the report submitted by the CBI last year in the solar case. The CBI report says that the controversial broker was behind the ’25-page knife’ that implicated Oommen Chandy.
Nandakumar accused that this letter was released with the knowledge of VS and Pinarayi Vijayan before the 2016 elections and that the two former Home Ministers of the Congress were interested in its release. These events caused a great stir, but all this soon wore off. Kerala is listening to Nandakumar again in connection with the current political allegations. The controversies unleashed by Nandakumar by describing LDF convenor and senior CPM leader EP Jayarajan as a close friend and paying Rs 10 lakh to BJP leader Shobha Surendran for a land deal are still unabated.
