Francis van Broekhuizen (48) has many sides and she would like to share them with her audience. She stands up for gay rights and is at the same time a “devout Catholic”. “People are surprised at how many sides I have,” says the singer in conversation with ‘De Telegraaf’. Because she is open about the things she stands for, her fans learn all kinds of things about her and she doesn’t always like that.

“Since the program about Lourdes, people have really come to me crying”

That is why Francis, who has become a well-known Dutchman in recent times, has become a little less loose-lipped. “I’m an open book, I talk about everything all day long. But it’s a different matter when I talk about my wife or my family,” says the soprano. Francis keeps many things to himself these days. She also tells less about her parents now. Lately they have had people knocking at their door asking if they could look around the house where Francis grew up. “I really have to protect them from that.”

In the past period, Francis was seen on TV in The smartest person, The Traitors in Maestro. She sees programs that express her versatility. “I love opera, but I also work for Feyenoord. I stand on a boat during Pride to stand up for gay rights, but I am also a devout Catholic who likes to visit Lourdes.”

Because of all these different things, Francis always taps into a different target group, which also brings her a lot of attention. Her name was mentioned during a church service and she also appears to be someone who can provide comfort. “Since the program about Lourdes, people have really come to me crying,” she says. And yet she is a fun role model for others. “It really inspires people that I can apparently do more than run screaming through the streets.”
