JAKAFRTA – Researchers are exploring ideas for making Mars a human habitation, inspired by the science fiction story Dune. In the story, the harsh desert planet Arrakis is transformed into a living, breathing world.

In the real world, scientists from NASA and DARPA have long been working on plans to make Mars a friendlier place for humans. One of their plans is to release water locked on the planet’s surface, heat the air so it doesn’t get too cold, and introduce bacteria to create oxygen, similar to how the metabolism of sandworms creates breathable air in Dune.

One big challenge is that Mars lost most of its atmosphere to solar radiation. This causes the planet to lose most of its water and locks the rest in ice and minerals. However, as depicted in Dune, researchers hope to return life to the planet.

One proposed strategy is to cover the planet with water, locked beneath its surface. However, without a magnetosphere like Earth’s, Mars would lose its water to space. Therefore, scientists are also considering creating an artificial magnetosphere that could protect the planet from solar radiation.

In addition, researchers are also considering using biology to help terraforming Mars. Bacteria that live on earth are able to consume gases in the atmosphere and produce water and oxygen. This idea is similar to the strategies used by characters in Dune to change the conditions of their planet.

Although there are still many challenges to overcome, such as how to turn an inhospitable Mars into a comfortable place for humans, researchers remain optimistic. They believe that with further research and the development of new technologies, the dream of making Mars a habitable place could become a reality.

So, although there is still a lot of work to be done, researchers continue to try to follow in the footsteps of the characters in the Dune story, in the hope that one day, humans will be able to call Mars their second home.
