GAZA – The Israeli military claims to have sent its warplanes to launch a wider attack on southern Lebanon. This was done amidst Israel’s failure to overthrow Hamas in Gaza.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said fighter jets launched a “massive wave of attacks” on Lebanese territory.

The attack was a retaliatory measure after an Israeli soldier was killed and eight others injured earlier in a rocket attack coming from southern Lebanon. The armed group Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility.

According to Al Jazeera, Hezbollah was blamed for firing rockets at Israeli military positions in Safad. It is a city in northern Israel, 15 km from the border. So this was an attack that occurred deep inside Israel.

This is not the first time the region has been attacked, but it is rare for Hezbollah to target such depth, meaning the armed group is sending a message.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for this attack, which is also unusual, as the group usually issues statements minutes after launching military operations near the border.

Now, what’s the message? Al Jazeera stated that one of the preventive measures is because recently the Israeli army has really increased its air strikes and targeted killings, pursuing Hezbollah officials, Palestinian officials. In the last five days, there have been three attacks of this kind that Hezbollah said ‘We can hurt you too’.

However, this is still within the limits of the rules of involvement in this conflict. The target is a military position. Hezbollah is still treading carefully. Yesterday’s speech delivered by the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, showed that Hezbollah is not interested in a full-scale war.
