Jan Smit (38) should perhaps have stopped his work earlier as a commentator, presenter and as a member of the selection committee at the Eurovision Song Contest. The presenter said this on Thursday during the talk show Humberto, where he received the Edison Pop Oeuvre Prize 2024.

Presenter Humberto Tan asked Smit why Smit actually stopped as a commentator, a task he took on for years. “I did it for twelve years and that also applied to the selection committee policy,” the Volendammer replied. “I did everything: we won, we came second, we didn’t reach the final twice.” He has also been able to present the music competition twice, Smit continued. “And maybe I should have stopped then. At some point you have seen and done everything.”

Smit thinks the Eurovision Song Contest is “the best week of the year,” because “everyone is satisfied.” But, he said: “I always did everything. But you don’t have to do everything.”

Most beautiful hobby

Tan also asked Smit about an earlier statement, namely that the singer wanted to end his career when he is 40 years old. “I have indeed said that very often because I was in a period when I was on an express train.” As a result, Smit says he lost the “pleasure” in pursuing the “most beautiful hobby.” The artist and presenter said he was “obsessive” and wanted to be the best. “That was just in my head.”

Smit looks back on the moment when things were not going well for him and he suffered a burnout. “It was only then that I actually started to realize what was important.”

The singer has “achieved more” than he “ever dared to dream,” he said after Tan asked him about his future plans. “So I just want to be satisfied.”
