A new Hotel Lelystad Airport may be built if the airport also gets the green light for expansion. Alderman Piet van Dijk said this during a committee meeting in the Lelystad council on Tuesday evening. By expansion he means the arrival of commercial flights at Lelystad airport. A majority of the House of Representatives indicated at the end of January that it was against this.

For a long time, the future of the current Hotel Lelystad Airport, which opened its doors in 2005, was uncertain. The then owner expected that holiday flights would take place from the airport in the not too distant future. But those plans failed to materialize and so no passengers arrived.

The existing building has not been used as a real hotel for a long time. Student pilots, refugees and migrant workers found shelter there. Until the Caransa group, the current owner of the building, a few years ago, approached the municipality with construction plans to expand significantly. They got the green light on Tuesday evening. The group also agrees with the municipality’s approach. Difficulty with decision
A local entrepreneur – who does not want to provide further explanation to Omroep Flevoland – still has difficulty with the decision. Because the new hotel, with a height of more than thirty meters – and a piece of forest that must be cut down for construction – would not fit within the applicable zoning plan.

But according to Van Dijk, the design of a possible new hotel to be built falls within the standards. We are still waiting for the green light for the expansion of the airport.
