Merel Westrik, Roos Moggré, Leonie ter Braak and Margreet Spijker are surprised by the reaction of broadcaster Bert Huisjes to their experiences at broadcaster WNL.

The presenters are four of the 25 (former) employees who attended the meeting last week AD talked about a culture of fear at WNL. Editor-in-chief and founder Huisjes was identified as the cause.

Westrik is surprised that Huisjes said in response to the article that his door is always open. “By saying that, you’re implying that no one ever walked through that door, that no complaint was ever made to you, that there was never any criticism of you, that no one ever went against you, or for themselves has emerged. And that is categorically not true,” she says AD.

Moggré was also surprised by that choice of words. “I have walked through that proverbial door many times. I have sounded the alarm several times. In emails, in telephone calls and during conversations in the editorial office and in the studio. But they simply did not listen. Bert taught Huisjes what not to do. That was the most valuable lesson.”

‘Complete denial of the problem’

Ter Braak does not understand that the stories have been dismissed. “You often see a complete denial of the problem among these types of men at the top. They cannot empathize, so the problem supposedly does not exist. This creates an unsafe working situation for young people, who are often dependent on their temporary contracts. “

According to Spijker, the reaction mainly shows what not to do. “We went back to the seventies for a moment. I thought we were further along in terms of emancipation. If you don’t put yourself in someone else’s shoes, then this is what you get.”

Huisjes responded to the article last week and admitted that he “certainly makes mistakes”, but that it is also his job to monitor the “editorial course”. The broadcaster was not immediately available for comment on Monday evening.
