The IMF made a series of recommendations to the Romanian Government to reduce the budget deficit, including the introduction of a carbon tax. The impact would be to make life more expensive

Among the discussions about the budget deficit or progressive taxation, the IMF delegation recommended to Romania the introduction of a new tax, namely the carbon tax.

It would apply to the transport and construction sectors and is an additional tax on the carbon our cars and homes release into the atmosphere.

First of all, a two-room apartment using natural gas emits around 2 tons of carbon dioxide per year, and a 4-room apartment emits around 3 tons of carbon dioxide annually, and a 120 square meter house, isolated, it emits somewhere around six tons of carbon dioxide per year.

The price for carbon emitted into the atmosphere is set at European level at 80 euros per ton.

The tax that Romanians who own a two-room apartment will pay

For a two-room apartment we should pay 160 euros per year, that is 800 lei.

The one with four rooms will be charged 240 euros, i.e. 1200 lei, and for a house we could pay 480 euros annually, i.e. 2400 lei.

If we heat the house with wood, then the carbon dioxide emissions are 11 tons per year, and that means a tax of 880 euros, i.e. 4,400 lei.

In our country, most rural households heat with wood.

We will also pay for car emissions.

A car with a 1,400 cubic centimeter engine emits two tons of carbon dioxide at a mileage of 15,000 kilometers per year.

So, a fee of 800 lei per year.

All freight transport, if this tax is introduced, will become more expensive. As a result, goods will become more expensive.
