One of the best-known sellers is Saskia Bouwmeester, owner of clothing store Dejacque in Oldenzaal. Since the corona pandemic, she has been posting videos on Instagram and Facebook in which she shows the clothes she sells to the public.

“We had already purchased clothing, but had to close the doors,” Bouwmeester tells Editie NL. “That’s why we started looking at how we could still sell the clothing. That’s how we came up with the idea of making videos.” And with success, because she currently has 148 thousand followers on Instagram and 286 thousand followers on Facebook. Bouwmeester will even open a second store next week.

Expansion

In Rhoon, South Holland, Angelique van Bij Ann is also reaping the benefits of this trend. She has been posting videos for a year and now has almost 30,000 followers on Instagram. This led to a major store expansion: “Since last weekend we have been in a building that is four times as large,” she says. “It’s really great. People come from all over the country.”

It is not surprising that people are willing to come from far away, says retail expert Tom Kikkert. “We also saw the same trend in cinemas and the rise of streaming services,” says the expert. “You see that despite those streaming services, people want to physically go to the cinema.”

Beat online store

The success during the corona period can also be easily explained. “Most good ideas arise in times of chaos and crisis,” Kikkert explains. “During the corona pandemic there was a need for physical contact and in these videos you can see how the clothing looks and you can easily get in touch with the company.”

According to Kikkert, it was wrongly believed for a long time that the webshop would beat the retailer. “But in all these technical developments, it is sometimes forgotten that we are human and those people need an experience.”

Influencer

But not everyone who watches the videos actually buys something. There is also a group of viewers who use the videos as inspiration. “In the videos I wear a complete outfit including bag and accessories. This way I show how it can be styled,” continues Saskia Bouwmeester of Dejacque.

The retailers who are visible on social media also grow into ‘influencers’ in their hometown and beyond. Bouwmeester enjoys the enthusiasm. “This week two boys from the neighborhood came and wanted to take a picture with me because they recognized me.”
