Amy Schumer has Cushing’s syndrome, in which too much of the hormone cortisol is produced. That’s what Jessica Yellin writes in her News Not Noisenewsletter, for which the journalist spoke with the 42-year-old American actress.

“It’s been a crazy few weeks for me and my family,” Schumer said in the newsletter. “Apart from the fear for my health, I also had to appear in front of the camera and make the internet resonate.” Still, she is happy with that, she continues. “Because that’s how I realized something was wrong.”

Schumer received many comments online about her appearance in, among other things The Tonight Show. According to some, her face looked swollen. “I reached out to Amy after the haters came her way,” Yellin wrote in her newsletter. “She shared that she has Cushing’s syndrome, caused by high dose steroid injections.”

In Cushing’s syndrome, the outer part of the adrenal glands produces too much of the hormone cortisol, the UMC Utrecht writes about the condition. “Cortisol has a very significant effect on almost all organs and tissues of the body,” the hospital said. According to the UMC Utrecht, symptoms can include “weight gain, high blood pressure and a full moon face (red and swollen)”.
