Barcelona, February 19 (EFE).- Among the MIR test candidates who had the real opportunity to choose between one of the 43 specialties available in Barcelona in 2023, 75% chose the specialty of family and community medicine (MFIC). , according to a study by the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS).

As reported by the ICS, the MFIC in Spain is the specialty that offers the most places. Specifically, in 2023, 2,455 were offered (28.7% of the total), a figure that multiplies by 18 the average offer of the rest of the specialties, which is 135.

“The values of primary care were the most compatible with my way of seeing medicine and understanding health. It seemed to me to be the place where medicine was closest and I liked the relationship that professionals and patients have in the CAPs,” explained Laia Serra, resident doctor at CAP El Clot.

Serra obtained position 377 in the 2023 MIR exam and, among all the specialties he had to choose from, he chose family and community medicine (MFIC) at CAP El Clot in Barcelona. Her case is added to that of the 2,324 medical students who have also chosen this specialty.

“I did not consider taking the specialty until the last year of my degree, after doing the rotation for several months. I found it very attractive the way in which the person is taken into account in their entire context, both family and social, and that, In the end, they are the determinants of the health of all people,” he detailed.

For his part, the head of Teaching at the Directorate of Primary and Community Care of the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) and leader of the study, Yoseba Cánovas, has pointed out that “the basis of the competitive preference index concludes that the specialty MFIC is attractive to MIR candidates.”

The competitive preference index is the indicator that has been used in the study to control the effect of inequality in the offer of MFIC places, with respect to the rest of specialties.

Likewise, in order to reduce the influence of the place in this choice and to have a more robust comparison, the five largest cities in Spain with more than 600,000 inhabitants (Zaragoza, Valencia, Madrid, Seville and Barcelona) have been chosen. since they offer most specialties and with an adequate number of places to be able to compare them.

As far as Barcelona is concerned, the document concludes that resident doctors prefer to choose MFIC over most laboratory and central service specialties.

Similarly, it also shows that MIR choose MFIC over the majority of surgical specialties such as thoracic, cardiovascular, pediatric, vascular, oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology surgery, general surgery and urology. .

And, among medical specialties, MFIC has a positive competitive preference with respect to 18 of the 22, which represents 81% of these specialties, placing it before rheumatology, pulmonology, geriatrics, nephrology, endocrinology or internal medicine, among others.

“This is an initial study carried out with data from 2023. Expanding the data with previous years and with that of 2024 will allow us to continue advancing in the study of the attractiveness of family and community medicine,” Cánovas concluded. EFE
