Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres sheds light on the grim nature of the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea. As a result of this conflict, trade through the Suez Canal decreased by 42%.
“Trade through the Suez Canal has fallen by 42 percent, since the start of Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea more than three months ago,” he said in a speech to the UN General Assembly, Wednesday, (8/2/2024).
He stressed the need for joint efforts to promote reconciliation and ease tensions, especially in regions such as Yemen and the Red Sea. The reason is, this conflict has threatened stability and hampered important trade routes.
Disruptions are projected to magnify disparities and economic hardship, impacting vulnerable populations and impeding progress in developing countries.
“The world’s poorest countries will owe more this year than their public spending on health, education and infrastructure. Meanwhile, governments will be forced to reduce investment and essential services,” he explained.
Responding to this possibility, the UN council has scheduled to discuss it at the Fourth International Conference on Developing Countries and Small Islands in May, and the Conference [Internasional] The third concerns mainland Developing Countries in June.
