Jakarta – Siksa Kubur is Joko Anwar’s highest achievement in experimenting with his storytelling. Not only Joko Anwar’s film, this film is also an innovation in terms of storytelling in Indonesian cinema.

This film tries to experiment in various ways, such as the filmmaker’s first religious horror concept, the detailed choice of music and scoring, and what is most noticeable is the story plot and plot in the film.

Usually, the majority of Indonesian films play it safe with realistic depictions and a straight-to-the-point plot, however, in this film the plot plays an important role in disrupting the storytelling which creates a surreal impression.

This is certainly a change that makes Indonesian audiences need to adapt in the way they watch films. Instead of preparing yourself for fear, Siksa Kubur offers a deep psychological journey into the minds of its viewers.

Because of this, the plot and ending of this film give the impression of providing each audience with a solution with one goal of “belief”.

In this article, we will discuss the theory and explanation of Siksa Kubur on how the audience responds to the storytelling presented by Siksa Kubur, which some people may still be confused about in digesting the film.

Here are theories and explanations of how this film leads viewers to believe:

Spoiler alert! This news contains spoilers, please ignore if you haven’t seen the film

1. Almost half the duration of the film is a visualization of the torment of the grave

Visuals of torture in the grave are clearly shown in the final minutes of the film, however, actually the torture in the grave begins in the first hour.

This clue can be heard from Pak Wahyu’s statement, namely that the torture of the grave has no physical form but comes from a person’s greatest fear in his life. Sita as the main character has the biggest fear that when she believes that religion is wrong, people will prove that the torture of the grave is true.

This has been marked since the first incident when Sita entered the grave. From there, Sita and Adil experienced the torment of the grave. Various strange events occur to Sita, such as the death of Mrs. Nani, her nurse friend who stabbed her, being haunted by Mr. Wahyu, and also entering a tunnel near her student.

Meanwhile, Adil is haunted by his fear of the corpses who try to “bullying” him while washing the corpse. This is also confirmed by the differences in scoring such as the intense heart rate as soon as Sita emerged from her grave. Because from the start, Sita was dead when she was buried alive and Adil couldn’t help as in the next explanation.

2. Sita was already dead when she was buried alive, Adil was pegged to death by a snake

The first act when Sita is buried feels ordinary. Sita did not see any grave torture on Mr. Wahyu’s body and Adil managed to dig up the grave again to raise Sita.

However, as in the previous explanation, this is a form of hallucination of Sita and Adil because they are actually dead. They cannot compare reality and the grave because that is a form of torture in the grave.

This theory is strengthened during the ritual scene where it is clearly stated that you don’t need eyes to see, you just need to believe. Which explains that the more Sita doesn’t believe, the more she will be tortured by the surreality of the world in the torment of her grave which gives rise to strange terrors every minute.

This was strengthened again when Sita realized that several of the previous scenes were just her hallucinations in which it turned out that she was still in the grave. However, this does not mean that when she saw Mr. Wahyu she was already in reality, but rather that Mr. Wahyu’s torture was the final peak of the form of torture in the grave that Sita experienced.

The last detail shown is when Sita managed to get out, assisted by Adil. Adil was seen swollen in the area of his eyes and neck which indicated he was pegged by a snake passing nearby. As they stagger, there is a voice over saying “man rabbuka” which means they have now entered the phase of death when Sita and Adil are questioned by the angel.
