ITEL wins contest on “Environmental Education”

News from Angola – The rubbish collection and real-time monitoring of plastic waste at sea project won the first edition of the “Environmental Education in Schools” contest.

The contest called “Planeta Oceano: As Marés está a Mudar” involved ten institutions from the 1st and 2nd cycles of Secondary Education of the Network of Schools Associated with UNESCO, within the scope of the “Environmental Education in Schools” project.

According to the press release issued by Notícia de Angola, a group of students from the Luanda Telecommunications Institute (ITEL) won the contest.

According to the document, the work carried out by three students consists of three aspects: construction of a robot capable of collecting plastic waste from the seas; implementation of a magnet to attract microplastics; and installation of a real-time monitoring camera, using artificial intelligence, which sends alert messages about the amount of waste at a given point in the ocean.

The distinction was delivered by the Minister of Education, Luísa Grilo.

Luísa Grilo highlighted the importance of the power of education expressed in the projects presented at the Ecological Fair.

“The projects presented today are practical solutions for the protection of the environment and reflect the result of the environmental education actions that have been implemented in several schools”, he commented.

Second place went to Escola de Saúde Castelo, with the project to create Retention Networks made from recycled material to collect waste before it reaches the sea.

The IPIL school (formerly IMIL or Makarenko) took third place, with the project “Solutions to end Plastic Pollution in the Oceans”.

Launched by the National Commission of Angola for UNESCO (CNU), Coca-Cola/Refriango and Associação Nação Verde (ANV), the project falls within the scope of the initiative “Environmental Education in Schools” and “Ecomovimento Oceanos”.

Ten institutions of the 1st and 2nd cycles of Secondary Education of the Network of Schools Associated with UNESCO”. During the month of May, this program also installed ecopoints in these schools and trained around 20,000 students aged 13 and over and teachers in environmental education, making them aware of the importance of collecting and treating solid waste.
